Getting an education today carries with it a number of different options. There are Charter Schools, Private Schools, Project-Based schools, private school, and comprehensive public schools. I have observed at a number of these schools and I have some strong feelings about each. While I believe each school has a number of positives to offer in terms of giving students a good education, I think if I had the opportunity I would develop my own school. If I had my ideal situation I would keep schools open all day and provide students the flexibility to work at a schedule that is different from the modern norm of sitting in school for six hours a day. I would not have students do homework, but they would complete their tasks at school because they are able to work at their own pace. However if a student were completely interested in what they were doing and wanted to take it home, then they would be at complete liberty to do so. The goal of my school would be to allow students to find their passion. Of course there would still be core subjects, such as Math, English, Social Studies, and Science, but students would be able to work on subjects that interest them as well. I firmly believe that students should be given choice when they are working. Taking away choice is what makes learning boring and disengaging. I would not have a set bell schedule at my ideal school, but students could work at a pace they find that works for them, and would be given opportunity to take breaks and eat lunch when they deem it necessary. I am not talking about taking away all boundaries and allow students to do whatever they want unrelated to academia, but giving students the opportunity to explore is essential to learning.
