This video was absolutely astonishing. The young man, Caine, displayed a tremendous amount of creativity, entrepreneurship, and determination in building his own arcade. What surprised me most is that he did not simply build a few cardboard arcade games, but paid such careful attention to detail by creating tickets, fun passes, and taking feedback from customers concerning the challenge of some games. As I relate this to my profession as an educator I cannot help but think that is a great example of how a student is willing to engage in learning by being allowed to be creative and work on something that is exciting and interesting. Caine did not get any customers for a while, but yet he persevered because he was interested in what he was doing. Even when his father asked him if he wanted to just go home that day because they had not had any customers he emphatically said no. I think what really struck me was how much children can accomplish when given the freedom to do so. In my classroom I want to cultivate an atmosphere that inspires students to be themselves, share their own ideas, collaborate with their peers, and use their creative genius to make learning exciting.
The classroom should inspire learning and not bore students and disinterest them from learning. I want to build a strong sense of community in my room so that students are able to feel comfortable in sharing their ideas and work. There are many pressures that students face outside of the classroom to conform to societal demands, but I want my classroom to be a place where students like Caine can feel at ease in being completely themselves in what they are learning. Students who are excited about learning will learn.
