I believe that many schools, including the university level, are still lagging in terms of using technology and the benefits of the digital age in the classroom. Students today seem to be immersed with technology in every aspect of their lives except for their education. Sure there is a Power Point presentation or an interesting clip to watch on YouTube being done inside the classroom, but even that is becoming "old school" to some degree. Students know how to use technology, and even when introduced to something new related to technology have the capability to grasp it quickly. Students need to be given more than just information, because students can access information almost anywhere. The resources are limitless; there is Wikipedia, YouTube, Google, Social Media that is at the fingertips. Today's students are able to access vast amounts of resources. As an educator I want to use that ability to my advantage. I want students to be able to purposefully access that information and use it to analyze, evaluate, develop hypotheses, construct arguments, and tailor that learning to their creativity, expertise, and personality. Students can take information and use their technology to make presentations of their work in multiple formats that can be of their own choosing. I think it is time to allow students to immerse themselves in technology in their education as well. Educators have a weighty burden on them to make sure that the use of technology is not a distraction, but actually a way to engage students in the learning process.
