I found the Instagram Scavenger Hunt to be a brilliant activity for students. It is a way to make a field trip engaging and connect it to what students have been doing in class. I would consider implementing an activity like this in class. Perhaps I would even use it for students to do just around the campus of their school. They could look for various items that I could hide, or pick different items around the school for them to find, and then they could document their findings using Instagram. I think this is a great way to allow students to use a Social Media platform for academic purposes. Students are consistently getting in trouble for using their devices for purposes unrelated to content, but this activity helps connect it to content and make it rich and meaningful. Allowing the students to participate in a scavenger hunt does just that because it was connected to what they students had been doing in their class.
One of the reasons I think activities like this one is important is that it breaks up the monotony of the classroom setting that students experience on a daily basis. Students need to be able to get up and move around and use their technology. This allows students a great deal of flexibility where they can be actively engaged. When a teacher can use an activity that allows students to be active physically and engaged with their technology, then students will take an active role in their learning and be able to make connections to the content. As a teacher I will work to implement activities that will engage students using multiple intelligences. I want to be able to give every student the opportunity to find their passion in learning and take responsibility for their own learning with the guidance of their teacher.
